Psychotherapy & Counselling

To support recovery for those experiencing stress or suffering, and to assist in developing tools to make overall change.

It is in the dynamic of the therapy relationship that a client’s interpersonal problems emerge and surrender themselves for analysis and modification.

By learning about who we are, what attitudes and behaviours are ours, we can come to understand ourselves in relationship to those we love, and those we don’t.

We come to know ourselves during the therapeutic process, through insight and acceptance.

About Alistair

Alistair has degrees in counselling, psychology, a master’s degree in psychotherapy, and has a passion for continued learning and education.

His curiosity about why we are, as well as what we are, motivates endless study and research, all with the aim of living a more rewarding life and being a more valuable therapist. He is a registered counsellor with the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia (PACFA), College of Counselling.

Alistair considers the work of Carl Rogers (1902-1987), a founder of humanistic psychology, fundamental to his practice. Rogers’ theoretical framework around change and human actualisation, put plainly, moving from stress and anxiety toward a fulfilling, meaningful life, is the outcome of a successful therapeutic alliance. Essential to this, Stephen Porges’ work on Polyvagal Theory outlines the necessary elements for positive change to occur, that is, the therapeutic relationship is embedded in safety and trust.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

One of the great therapeutic voices of the twentieth century, Irvin Yalom, proposed that people come to therapy most of the time because of their lack at successfully developing and holding onto meaningful interpersonal relationships.

If you’ve had therapy or counselling before and it was an unsatisfying experience it might have simply been a case of having had the wrong professional at the wrong time. We don’t know what we don’t know, and you never know what you’re in store for with a different therapist.

Life can be hard, and it demands your attention. We must work toward the goals we want to achieve. From within the safety of the therapeutic alliance, insight and inspiration are just moments away.

Fees

Alistair’s practice is in the inner west and he works week days, and Saturdays, by appointment only. Private therapy and counselling are not covered by mental health care plans or Medicare and Referrals are not necessary.
